The Sun Foundation invites students, teachers, community leaders, and the general public to attend the Clean Water Celebration, April 18 and 19, 2010. This two day, four event program takes place in three different locations throughout the Peoria area. Clean Water Celebration encourages us to learn to improve water quality, to think critically and creatively about adequate and safe water supplies, and to promote the wise use of natural resources.

Day 1

Event 1  “Parade of Waters”

APRIL 18, 2010  Opening, Noon    Gateway  Building, 200 NE Water St., Peoria, IL

A “Parade of Waters” will kick off the Clean Water Celebration on Sunday, April 18 at noon at the Gateway Building on the Peoria riverfront.  Mayors, Village Presidents, and other Community Leaders will each bring water that was drawn from the Illinois River, lakes, and streams from their community and symbolically pour their waters together declaring their community’s commitment to clean water.  A Native American Blessing of the waters will then be given and  “Making Waves” awards will be presented to groups or individuals that have made a difference to the cleanliness of water and the environment.   Free and open to the public.

Event 2  “Science Riverwalk”

April 18, 2010     Science Riverwalk     1:00pm      
Gateway Building, 200 NE Water St., Peoria, IL

Enjoy a walk along the Illinois River while learning about many of the plants, animals, and factors that influence the river and the people that depend on its rushing waters. Joining the walk will be scientists, storytellers, and teachers sharing their insight and knowledge. Also take part in fishing, water critter identification, water quality tests, storytelling, and face painting.  All ages are welcome!  Questions, call Camron Stanley at 309-253-5988. Event 3 “ Lecture & Dinner”

April 18, 2010       6:30 pm
CWC Keynote address- Dinner & Lecture.  Lecture Only $10, Student Dinner $15, Adults $22. (Registration form for dinner will be posted below in December). GAR HALL, 416 Hamilton Blvd, Downtown Peoria.  Explore with wildlife bioligist Dr. Rainey Inman Shorey, how water affects wildlife in our backyards, and around the world.  Learn about the unique relationships between water and wildlife across the globe and identify what you can do to sustain these important systems.  Dr. Shorey is a published scientist, regional, national, and international conference presenter, with extensive lab and field research experience including international projects based in remote locations such as Kenya and the northern slopes of Alaska.  She is the Environmental Manager at the Caterpillar Corporation Mossville Engine Center. 

Day 2
Monday April 19th, 2010 9 am to 2 pm Peoria Civic Center. 

An inspiring day of learning ways to conserve and protect our water resources, locally and globally through the arts and sciences.

2010 THEME: Water & Wildlife

FREE & Open to the public! Bus transport funds available

KEYNOTE SESSIONS: 9 am and 11 am
Featuring wildlife biologist Dr. Rainey Inman Shorey, Caterpilar Lead Environmental Manager, Mossville Engineer Center. Published scientist, regional, national and international conference presenter with extensive lab and field research experience, including international projects based in remote locations, such as Kenya & the northern slopes of Alaska.

ENVIRONMENTAL STREAMS: 9 am to 2 pm
Environmental Streams are designed to give teachers and their classes more substance and science content. The content in these streams will cover goals 4, 12, 13, 16 and 22 of the Illinois Learning Standards. Each teacher will be able to take their class to a stream of three twenty-minute presentations on WATERSHEDS, AQUATIC LIFE/FISH, and RECYCLING. 4A, 12A, 12B, 12E, 13B, 16E, 22C.

SPECIAL EVENTS - Breakout Sessions: 9 am to 2 pmSession 1– The Medicine Wheel and a Community of Humans - Jo Lakota, Native American Storyteller and educator. Peoria’s principal Native American Story Teller.
Session 2 – pHun Chemistry - presented by the Chemistry Club of Illinois Valley Community College, Oglesby, IL.
Session 3 — Chem Magic - entertaining and educational chemistry shows presented by the Chemistry students of Pekin Community High School.
Session 4 — Mark Twain, a heroic character in American legend & literature– as performed by Warren Brown, Illinois Humanities Council.
Session 5 – EARTH BALLOON Our Watery Blue Planet, Whereabouts, Inc. Earth Balloon a 20’ inflatable globe is an incredible learning environment
Session 6– Adventures with John James Audubon, with storyteller Brian “Fox” Ellis. Follow the travels and travails of Marquette, Joliet and LaSalle.
Session 7 — History of Herps, reptiles and amphibians along the Illinois River-Jason Juchems, Central Illinois Herps Society
Session 8 – History of Eagles, their characteristics, habitats, adaptations, migration on the Illinois River-Joe Hand, Wildlife Prairie State Park
Session 9 – Native Americans and Wetland Resources for survival,-Dickson Mounds.
Session 10 — Illinois Wildlife: Living native Illinois birds and mammals-Marge Bjorklund, Wildlife Rehabilitator and Educator.
Session 11 — River Sweep, an annual clean up the Illinois River - Tom Rowen & Steve Pierz, Illinois River Sweep.
Session 12 – The “Cool Bus” – Dundee Crown HS. Join Dundee Crown students and learn about sustainability with a tour of their “Cool Bus”.
Session 13 — Living Lands and Waters Michael Coyne Logan. How one person can make a difference. The 1 million Trees program & green schools.

TRANSPORTATION FUNDING MAY BE AVAILABLE:
NOTE: If your school is within Mason, Peoria, Tazewell, or Woodford counties, you may complete the application for requesting financial support for transportation. Peoria County Recycling & Resource Conservation, District 150 Schools, Howard & Howard Attorneys P.C., Tazewell County Solid Waste Program, & the Central Region Groundwater Protection  Committee, offers schools within Mason, Peoria, Tazewell, & Woodford counties the opportunity to attend the Clean Water Celebration. The financial support provided will pay for transportation of students to the event.
