Teaching Assistants

As a Teaching Assistant (TA), you will be an integral part of the Art and Science in the Woods team! It takes nearly 100 TA’s to run a successful camp each summer. TA needs vary by class, but we typically assign two adult TA’s and possibly one Jr. TA to each class. TA’s must arrive at camp no later than 8:45 a.m. each day and must stay until 3:00 p.m. Mon-Thurs, and possibly until 5:00 p.m. on Friday.

As a general rule, we don’t assign parents to their child’s class. This gives kids a better chance to explore and learn on their own and ensures that TA’s are focused equally on all students in the class. We also do not assign Jr. TA’s to classes with teen students and will not assign Jr. TA friends to the same class.

Although we encourage you to learn and have fun, your main function as a TA will be to assist instructors with the needs of their students. This often requires taking initiative on your own to help students with their work, and we ask that you give your full attention to the students in your class. We will work to assign you to a class of interest, but cannot grant specific class requests.
TA Assignments will be sent out in mid-May. Please be in touch with our Volunteer Coordinator, Sharon Obery at sharon@sunfoundation.org with any questions.

Bus Monitors

We need a few adult volunteers to serve as bus monitors. We have buses coming from Bradley (Peoria), Liberty Leadership School (Peoria), Germantown Hills, and Metamora. As a bus monitor, you will help with attendance and keeping students safe and happy on the bus. All bus monitors ride the bus for free and can sign their children up to ride the bus for free as well.

Nurses

We need at least two professional nurses on site at all times. Nurses play an important role in keeping our students safe and comfortable throughout the week. We need nurses to be in the office from 8:30 a.m. – 3:15 p.m. on Mon – Thurs, and from 8:45 a.m. – possibly 5:00 p.m. on Friday.

As a volunteer nurse, you will assess and provide basic treatment to participants (students, volunteers, staff) as needed. For more information about helping out as a nurse, please be in touch with Camp Coordinator, Sharon Obery at sharon@sunfoundation.org.

Office Help and Other Volunteers

These volunteer opportunities are flexible, based on your availability and interest. Please complete the volunteer application, let us know what kinds of opportunities you are interested in, and we will be in touch to coordinate further.
